Attendance and Discipline Policy

Chapel Services
Chapel is held every Monday and Wednesday from 10:05-10:40 a.m. at the Johnson Center for Worship and the Fine Arts – follow the sidewalk behind the Randall Campus Center.  In addition to the traditional Monday/Wednesday chapels, the occasional Friday chapel is scheduled at a sight different than the Worship Center.  Chapel semester schedules are available on-line or in the Campus Ministries receptionist area (Barn).

Why Do We Require Chapel?
Students' attendance in chapel is required because, within our Christian framework, we believe that all teaching of truth must be built on a foundation of God's truth.  Thus, in the same way we require students to study the truth of physical science, the arts, and literature, there is no contradiction in requiring students to study God's truth.  Chapel facilitates students' experience and understanding of God's truth through study of the Bible, exposure to corporate worship, and opportunities to understand the relationship offered to us in Christ.

Chapel Attendance and Discipline Policy
If you have any questions about the following, please contact the Campus Ministries Dept. at x8441 (330.471.8441) or stop by our office in the Randall Campus Center.
Chapel is required for all full-time students. Students must acquire 20 chapel credits per semester (one chapel = one credit). Student attendance is recorded at each Malone chapel service. Chapel begins at 10:05 a.m. -- please be on time to receive chapel credit. Bring your student I.D. to each chapel so that it can be scanned and your attendance recorded.  Check the Spiritual Life section of your Student Handbook for more details on chapel attendance.

To allow students a chance to receive chapel credit for a chapel they may have missed, Campus Ministries permits students to watch the video of a missed chapel.  Watching a video, in conjunction with writing a one-page reflection paper, allows students to gain back chapel credits that may be needed to reach the 20-credit semester requirement.  Video procedures and paper guidelines are available in Campus Ministries; this credit-bearing opportunity must be taken advantage of by the last regular class day of the semester at 5 p.m. (but, don’t wait until then!).

For students who might unfortunately miss too many chapels in a semester despite the opportunity listed above, the disciplinary sanction is a disciplinary fine.   This fine is explicitly listed on a student’s bill as a “disciplinary fine”, and is noted in a student’s permanent record.  The number of chapels attended in a semester will determine the amount of the fine, for example: 19 chapel credits = $35, 18 credits = $70, 17 credits = $105, etc.  The money received from these fines will be directed into Malone’s Service-Learning Program.  See the on-line Student Handbook at www.malone.edu/d67 for details.
