![]() General Program Description
Service-learning trips will vary in their focus, duration and location, but all trips will include reflection and reciprocity. Reflection can be in many forms such as journaling, group discussion, etc. Barbara Jacoby reminds us, "...we learn best through a combination of thought and action, reflection and practice, theory and application."
Reciprocity assumes a partnership between the Malone team and the groups we work with around the country and around the world. Both the Malone team and our hosting partners are equals. Both are learners and both are servers. We will serve as best we can recognizing that those being served are in control of the service provided. We trust our hosts to teach us what the needs are, and we offer the resources we have to address those needs.
Our MaloneService-Learning program fits into the larger work of providing Christian higher education across many different academic disciplines. The 1893-94 Malone Catalog offers this reminder. "The object of our school is to lead the student into a thorough acquaitance with the Scriptures." "Methods.. consist of a union of study and work, learning and practicing. We therefore endeavor to keep an even balance between the two, not considering study as a task and the work as recreation but both alike as business for God."
