Department of Fine Arts Music Audition Guidelines


Auditions on the major instrument/voice should be completed prior to July 1 of the entering year.
 
Individual audition appointments may be scheduled with the following faculty members:

  • All students pursuing the BS in Music Education, the BA in Music, or the BA in Music Ministry must audition prior to beginning the music major.  Audition requirements for piano, voice, and orchestral instruments are listed below.
  • Participation in choral and instrumental ensembles are by audition. 
  • Scholarships are available for students with strong ability in instrumental and vocal music.  Choral music scholarships are available to music majors.  Band scholarships are available to majors and non-majors.   Audition information for each area is listed below.
  • Scholarships are awarded for participation in major ensembles.  Scholarship awards will be given each year for four years, provided the student remains in good status in the major ensemble. 

Audition Deadlines:

Place
Auditions will be in Founders Hall. You will be notified of the exact room location.
 
Procedure
Each student will have an interview/audition with music faculty, lasting approximately thirty minutes. Parents are welcome to attend. A Theory Placement test (for potential music majors) will be administrated at this time to determine placement for theory classes.
 
Accompanist
If your audition requires accompaniment, you may bring your own accompanist. If this is not possible, notify the music office when you schedule your audition and an accompanist will be provided. 
 
Scholarships
Scholarships are available based on ability and financial need. If you wish to apply for a scholarship, you must obtain financial aid forms from the Financial Aid Office. Those applying for scholarships are advised to schedule a December audition.
 
Audition Repertoire
The following is a list of repertoire that is considered appropriate for a college audition. Sight-reading will be included. The student may also perform a piece of choice music different from list.
 
  • Piano
    • A composition from the Baroque Era (Bach, Scarlatti, etc.)
    • One movement from a Classical Sonata or Sonatina (Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Clementi, Kuhlau).
    • A composition from the Romantic Era (Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Schubert, Chopin) or a 20th Century composition (Debussy, Kabalevsky, Bartok, Gershwin, etc.).
    • At least one of the above should be memorized.
    • Major and minor scales and chords.
  • Organ
    • A piano audition is required. Follow the above guidelines for the piano audition.
    • An organ selection may be performed.
  • Voice
    • Prepare at least two pieces.
    • One classical art song in a foreign language.
    • One 20th Century English art song or musical theater selection.
    • All music is to be memorized.
  • Woodwind and String
    • A solo selected from the OMEA contest list or the equivalent.
    • One etude or technical study.
    • Major scales, chromatic scales and arpeggios.
  • Brass
    • A solo selected from the OMEA contest list or the equivalent.
    • Major scales, chromatic scales and arpeggios.
  • Percussion
    • A solo on at least one of the following:
      1. snare drum
      2. timpani
      3. mallets
    • Sight reading on snare drum and mallets.
  • Guitar  
    • A solo from the Classical Literature.
    • A solo of your choice.
    • Major and Minor scales and arpeggios.
