Women’s Golf Sends Heather Grovemiller To NAIA NationalsThe Malone College women’s golf team, led by second-year head coach Max Baxer, scheduled a spring season against top opponents hoping to earn an at-large bid to the NAIA National Tournament in May. Last fall, the Pioneers had the opportunity to host the NAIA Region IX Tournament at the Zoar Village Golf Course in Zoar, Ohio but the squad was edged out of the NAIA nationals automatic bid, finishing second by just seven strokes (361-368) at the region event. Although the Pioneers played well this spring and won two of their four tournaments, it wasn’t quite enough to get them to nationals as they did not garner an at-large berth to the event.
Malone began its spring campaign at the Capital University Invitational with a score of 382 for a fourth-place finish among 10 teams. The team then captured the Ohio Cup, hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College, and also won the team title at the Washington & Jefferson (PA) University Invitational with a score of 357. The Pioneers concluded their season with a second-place finish among an eight-team field at the Westminster (PA) College Invitational with a score of 353. Although the team did not qualify for the NAIA national tournament last fall, Heather Grovemiller (So., Perry H.S.) did qualify for the NAIA national event by virtue of her individual first-place finish at the regional tournament. At regionals, she posted a score of 84 (41-43) and won in a playoff over Tiffin University's Kelly Rethman who also had an 84 (46-38). At the NAIA National Tournament held at the Blackthorn Golf Club in South Bend, Indiana May 17-20, Grovemiller was one of only five individuals competing among approximately 120 competitors. She tallied rounds of 94, 91, 94 and 91 to post a total of 370 (+82) and finished 99th overall. With the entire Pioneer team eligible to return next season, the squad will be poised to again battle for the NAIA Region IX Tournament title and earn the automatic bid to the 2006 NAIA National Tournament. |
