Good Teaching: Reflection and Practices

There is a long tradition of contemplation and action in Christian spirituality. In our own lives, we often experience a tension between being and doing. We are pulled between Martha-like busyness and Mary-like rest. At other times, we enter into a healthy rhythm of reflection and practice. This same rhythm is integral to our work as teachers. We experience it as we journey toward more faithful teaching under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Or, to put it more succinctly, toward good teaching.

We invite you to join with your colleagues this year to explore the theme of Good Teaching, keeping in mind the many-splendored meanings of the term “good.” As you peruse the schedule of events, take note of the balance of reflection, discussion, and practical resources that we built into this year’s events. Also, take note of the many “goods” we will explore this year. These goods include:

  • the goods toward which we aim in Christian higher education
  • the variety of good ways to approach relationships between Christian faith, academic learning, and living
  • living examples of good teaching as embodied in teachers we ourselves have learned from
  • good practices in the areas of performance-based assessment, responding to resistant students, service-learning pedagogy, teaching via discussion, and test item construction
In order to accommodate the schedules of as many faculty members as possible, each event has been scheduled for two different days/times. As an added incentive, and to enhance the social dimension of the events, refreshments will be served.
