Pioneers Hold On For 3-2 Win At Ursuline

The Malone College women’s soccer team jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in Tuesday night’s match at Ursuline College before withstanding a late Arrow rally to notch a 3-2 American Mideast Conference North Division victory.  Pioneer midfielder Fleur Wynne-Morgan (Sr., County Kerry, Ireland) gave Malone a commanding 3-0 advantage in the 31st minute after scoring off an assist from forward Lauren Armbrust (Fr., Chippewa H.S.).  Ursuline answered back just over two minutes later, though, as forward Jaimie Grindle got the Arrows on the scoreboard with a goal in the 33rd minute.  Ursuline forward Kristen Hayes was then able to cut the deficit to 3-2 with a score midway through the second period, but the Arrows were unable to close the gap any further as Pioneer goalkeeper Merisa Salazar (Jr., San Jose, CA) shutout the hosts’ attack over the final 25 minutes of regulation to preserve the 3-2 win.  With the one-goal victory, Malone improved to 7-5-0 (3-2-0 AMC N) on the season while Ursuline dropped to 3-8-0 (1-2-0 AMC N).

Pioneer forward Aleesha Denmeade (Jr., North Canton Hoover H.S.) accounted for Malone’s first two goals of the afternoon as she scored on a pass from Wynne-Morgan in the ninth minute and then knocked in a corner kick rebound in the 15th. The Pioneers registered 12 shots on goal during the contest while Arrow keeper Keri Wolf made nine saves.  Salazar and fellow keeper Sam Brown (Jr., Butler, PA) combined to stop 12 of Ursuline’s 14 shots on goal.

Malone will now have a week off before its next contest, a 4:00 p.m. match-up at home next Wednesday (10/10) against local rival Walsh University (8-3-2, 1-2-1 AMC S).
