Walsh Shuts Out Malone 3-0The Malone College women’s soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss at home to local rival Walsh University on Wednesday evening. The visiting Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead after scoring in the final seconds of the first half and then added goals in the 53rd and 79th minutes to pull away for the 3-0, non-conference victory.
The Pioneers registered four shots on goal in the contest, but the squad was unable to beat Walsh goal keeper Rachel Burcher, who recorded her seventh shutout of the year. Malone goal keeper Merisa Salazar (Jr., San Jose, CA), meanwhile, stopped six of the Cavaliers’ nine shots on goal.
Following the tough defeat, the Pioneers’ overall record drops to 7-6-0 (3-2-0 AMC North) on the season while Walsh improves to 11-3-2 (1-2-1 AMC South).
Malone will next host NAIA #25 Houghton (NY) College (7-2-2, 4-0-0 AMC North) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Pioneers and Highlanders last met in the 2006 NAIA Regional Semi-finals when the two teams played to 0-0 double-overtime tie. Houghton, though, was able end the Pioneers’ postseason run in dramatic fashion after winning the ensuing penalty kick shootout, four goals to three. |
