Houghton (NY) Blanks Malone 1-0

 
The Malone College men’s soccer team fell at home to American Mideast Conference North Division foe Houghton (NY) College on Saturday afternoon by the final score of 1-0. The tough defeat drops the Pioneers’ overall record to 5-8-1 (1-2-0 AMC North) on the season while the Highlanders improve to 7-2-3 (2-1-0 AMC North).  Seven Of Malone’s eight losses this year have now come by narrow one-goal margins.
 
Houghton midfielder Steve Grudda posted the lone score of the match in the 27th minute off a pass from teammate Johnny Kimani.  The Highlander defense then went on lockdown as they shut out the Pioneers over the remaining 63 minutes for the 1-0 win.  Malone registered three shots on goal in the match while goal keeper Mike Porter stopped two of Houghton’s three shots on goal.  Highlander keeper Erik Lefebvre tallied three saves to notch his sixth shutout of the season.
 
The Pioneers return to action on Tuesday (10/16) when they travel to Tiffin University (8-5-1) for a 3:30 p.m. match with the NCAA Division II Dragons.
