Pioneers Knock Off Daemen (NY) 2-1 In Double OvertimeThe Malone College men’s soccer team picked up a 2-1 victory at Daemen (NY) College on Saturday afternoon as Jason Nelson (Sr., Green H.S.) scored the game-winner with less then four minutes remaining in the second and final overtime period. The thrilling American Mideast Conference North Division win improves the Pioneers’ record to 6-9-1 overall (2-2-0 AMC N) while the Wildcats fall to 4-10-1 (0-2-1) on the season.
Daemen grabbed an early 1-0 advantage when Casey McNinch scored in the 24th minute. The Wildcats then maintained this slim lead until midway through the second half when Marcos Batchelor (So., London, England) tallied his fifth goal of the season to knot the score at 1-1. The match then appeared to be headed for a tie until Nelson found the back of the net in the 107th minute to give Malone the exciting 2-1 victory.
The Pioneers held an 11-8 advantage in total shots on goal during the match. Malone goal keeper Mike Porter (Sr., Highland H.S.) tallied six saves while Wildcat keeper Gary Arruda stopped nine shots.
This week, Malone (6-9-1, 2-2-0 AMC N) will wrap up its regular season schedule with a pair of home matches. The Pioneers will open the week with a 3:30 p.m. contest against local rival Walsh University (8-6-1, 2-3-0 AMC S) on Wednesday before facing NAIA #24 Notre Dame (OH) College (12-2-2, 4-0-0 AMC N) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. |
