Malone Ties Walsh 1-1The Malone College men’s soccer team played to a 1-1 overtime draw with visiting Walsh University on Wednesday afternoon. Both teams registered goals in the opening minutes of the second half as Francisco Espinosa (Fr., Mexico City, Mexico) gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead after scoring off a pass from Marcos Batchelor (So., London, England) in the 48th minute. This one-goal advantage lasted just 53 seconds, though, as Aaron Davis quickly answered back for the Cavaliers, knotting the match at 1-1 with 41:54 remaining in the contest. Each team had opportunities to pull ahead over the remainder of regulation and in both overtime periods, but neither squad could find the back of the net, resulting in the 1-1 stalemate. Following the tie, Malone’s record stands at 6-9-2 (2-2-0 AMC N) on the year while Walsh’s overall mark moves to 8-6-2 (2-3-0 AMC S).
The Cavaliers enjoyed a 7-4 advantage in total shots on goal during the contest. Malone goal keeper Mike Porter (Sr., Highland H.S.) posted six saves, including two clutch stops in overtime. Walsh keeper Ben Pflum registered three saves.
The Pioneers will wrap up their regular season schedule at home on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. with a crucial American Mideast Conference North Division match against NAIA #25 Notre Dame (OH) College (13-2-2, 4-0 AMC North). A victory over the Falcons would give Malone the third and final AMC North playoff spot and would set up an American Mideast Conference Qualifying Match at AMC North #2 seed Houghton (NY) College on Wednesday, October 31st. However, a loss on Saturday would eliminate Malone from NAIA postseason contention. |
