Malone’s Hal Smith Earns All-AMC North Division Coach of Year Honor; Four Pioneers Named To All-AMC Teams

Four members of the Malone College men’s basketball team, led by veteran head coach Hal Smith, were selected to the All-AMC North Division Teams in AMC voting yesterday.  In addition, Smith was selected as the All-AMC North Coach of the Year as he led Malone to the North Division regular-season title and a 20-8 regular-season record.

Senior forward Tyler Renner (Garaway H.S.) and senior guard Ben Carver (Shelby H.S.) were each named to the All-AMC North First Team while senior center Shane Humphrey (Loudonville H.S.) was selected to the Third Team.  In addition, junior forward Jarrod Ferwerda ( Lake H.S. ) was named Honorable Mention.

Renner and Carver pace the team in scoring at 17.3 and 16.0 points, respectively, while Humphrey has averaged 11.2 per outing.  Renner also paces the squad in rebounds at 8.3 per contest.  Ferwerda is tossing in 8.4 point per game.

After winning an AMC Tournament semifinal contest against Mt. Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday, Malone (21-9, 7-3 AMC North) will host Cedarville University (21-7, 10-4 AMC South) in the AMC Tournament finals on Tuesday, March 4th at 7:30 p.m. in Malone’s Osborne Hall.  The winner of this contest will earn an automatic bid to the NAIA Div. II National Tournament in Point Lookout, Missouri March 12-18.
