Malone College has named Rhoda
Sommers-Johnson, Ph.D., associate professor of education, as dean of the School of Education, replacing Christine Krol,
Ph.D. upon her retirement in June.
Dr. Sommers-Johnson came to Malone one year ago with a wealth of experience in teacher education both as a faculty member and department chair. Prior to coming to Malone, in 2007, she served as visiting professor for the Chinese Teacher Training Center, Beijing, PRC. She served as assistant professor of education and as chair of the Education Department, Mount Vernon Nazarene University from 1999-2007. She has also served as an adjunct professor of education for Philadelphia Biblical University (in 2004), and as an elementary school classroom teacher.In addition to her considerable service as professional mentor, program reviewer, and Praxis III assessor, Dr. Sommers-Johnson has been honored twice with the Outstanding Faculty Award, May 2007 and December 2006; 2005 Excellence in Education, Ohio Magazine; President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, MVNU, 2005; and Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities, 1983. She holds memberships in the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, National Middle School Association, Ohio Middle School Association, and Phi Kappa Phi.She has authored eight
publications for educators and served as a presenter for numerous professional
conferences, trainings, and workshops.
She earned the B.A. in elementary education from Cedarville
College (Cedarville,
OH) in 1984, the M.A. in curriculum and
instruction from Grace Theological Seminary (Winona Lake, IN) in 1993, and the
Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from Andrews
University (Berrien Springs, MI)
in 1999. |
