Two Malone Men’s Golfers Earn NAIA All-America Honors

Several days after last week’s NAIA National Championships, the NAIA Golf Coaches Association has selected its 2008 NAIA All-Americans.  The selections were based on yearly average for both the fall and spring seasons, tournament wins and performance at the NAIA national tournament.

The Malone men’s golf team placed two golfers on the All-America list with both taking Third-Team honors. Sophomore Ben Smith (Carrollton H.S.) and freshman Justin Lower (Northwest H.S.) earned the distinction with Lower becoming the first-ever freshman golfer at Malone to earn the NAIA All-America award.

Smith had a fall average of 74.9 and a spring average of 74.7 with a win at the AMC Region IX Championship.  He finished tied for 47th at the national tournament.  Lower had a fall average of 74.4 and a spring average of 74.7.  He had one win at the Malone Spring Invitational.  He was also named All-American for the NCCAA last fall and was selected to the All-NAIA Freshmen First Team.  In addition, he finished tied for 10th at this year’s NAIA national event.

Malone recently finished 16th among a 28-team field at the NAIA National Championships at the Indiana National Golf Club in Plymouth, Indiana May 13-16.
