With a new president at the helm, a name change coming in the fall, and an expanding campus, it could be said that it is a new day at Malone College.  And now, Malone announces the newest members of its leadership team, all beginning on July 1. The following individuals are well equipped to guide the growing institution through some of the most exciting times in Malone’s history.
 
Wilbert (Will) J. Friesen, Ph.D., has accepted the provost position vacated by Robert Zwier, Ph.D.  Patricia L. Long, Ed.D., has served as interim vice president for academic affairs since Zwier’s departure in June of 2007.  Dr. Friesen currently serves as interim dean, School of Humanities, Religion, and Social Sciences of Fresno Pacific University in Fresno, California. He joined the faculty there in 1993 and has held a variety of teaching and administrative positions for the past 15 years.  Born in Chilliwack, B.C., Canada, Friesen earned the B.A. in psychology from Tabor College, Hillsboro, KS (1977); the M.S. in psychology from the University of Kansas, Lawrence KS (1980); the M.A. in theology and historical studies from Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary, Fresno, CA (1982); and the Ph.D. in religion and culture from McGill University, Montreal, Quebec (1999).  Selected publications include the forthcoming, “Religion and Development Ethics:  Contradiction or Possibility,” submitted for publication to Pacific Journal (2008) as well as the book review article, Nicholas Boyle, Who Are We Now? (Notre Dame: University of Notre Dame Press, 1998) for Modern Theology.
 
Richard (Rick) K. Rieder, M.B.A., has accepted the position of vice president for finance, the office vacated by Richard A. Pakel who is retiring in June but who will continue to consult with the College through December, 2008.  Rick Rieder currently serves as vice president for finance and as the chief financial officer at Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois.  He has served as chief financial officer at Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee; and has also provided financial leadership to Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana; Lancaster Bible College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and Grand Rapids School of the Bible and Music in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  He holds memberships in the Association of Business Administrators of Christian Colleges (having served as president, vice president, and as a board member), the National Association of College and University Business Officers, and the College and University Personnel Association (CUPA).  He was honored with the Best Practices Award by CUPA in 1999 and has served as a presenter/panellist on topics including risk management, legal, auxiliary services, board presentation, and financial ratios. He has also served as chair of the church personnel committee, as leader of a church life group, and has been actively involved in church choir presentations.  Rieder earned the B.A. with a double major in business and music in 1978 at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas; a master’s degree in music from Oklahoma City University in 1982; and the M.B.A. from Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in 2005.  In addition, he earned a certificate of completion from the College Business Management Institute at the University of Kentucky in 1991.
 
Brock Schroeder, Ph.D. has accepted the position of vice president for enrollment and marketing vacated by John Chopka.  He currently serves as dean of academic support at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois.  In that position, he has been an active participant in admissions events on campus and has been a featured presenter during summer orientations and an administrator for the freshman seminar and academic advising program. Schroeder was responsible for coordinating of marketing material and web site design for academic affairs at ONU, where he also worked with graphic designers to develop various marketing pieces.  Dr. Schroeder also served as an admissions counselor at ONU during a period of rapid growth.  Also notably, Schroeder coordinated the Associated Colleges of Illinois College Success Network grant ($20,000 annually) to develop leaders among first-to-college students of color, creating marketing strategies for recruitment of minority students through the development of retention initiatives.  He has made annual paper presentations at the Great Lakes Planetarium Association, also presenting to the International Planetarium Society meeting, Valencia, Spain in 2004 and to the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, Pomona, CA in 2007.  His article, “Science Instruction in the Context of Christian Faith” in the Journal, Theology and Science is expected to be published later this year or spring of 2009.  Schroeder earned the B.A in Christian education from Olivet Nazarene University in 1991; did post-baccalaureate work at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, in 1996; earned the M.A. in science education from Olivet Nazarene University in 1999; and the doctor of philosophy degree in education from Walden University.
 
Karen Dean Fry has accepted the position of vice president for constituent relations—a newly created position at Malone.  In this position, her primary responsibilities will be to work with various church communities to bring major speakers, Christian conferences, and community programs to the campus; to give leadership in building significant bridges to the church communities from which Malone recruits hundreds of students; and to promote strong community/college relationships in strategic areas not currently being served.  Karen will also work with the College Pastor’s office in expanding programming for Malone’s campus chapel services and other spiritual life initiatives.  Currently, Fry serves as the senior pastor for Blakemore Church of the Nazarene in Nashville, Tennessee.  A former administrator at Word Music Company/John T. Benson Publishing, Fry has published musicals for churches and schools including The Late Great Potentate; Amazing Grace; Sounds of His Love; Arch the Angel; Prime Time Christmas; Lord of Life; Shine, Jesus, Shine; and Toys and Treasures; as well as penning the well known gospel song, Ten Thousand Joys.  A published author, she is a popular retreat speaker in a variety of college and church settings throughout the United States and beyond.  She has also served as promotions director and constituency relations administrator for the Lamb’s Club, Times Square New York, where her responsibilities included fundraising, public relations, and student internships taking place at the Lamb’s for various colleges and universities in this renowned theatrical/worship venue located in mid-town Manhattan.  She earned the B.A. in English/journalism from Trevecca Nazarene University, the M.A. from Tennessee State University, and has taken additional graduate work at Vanderbilt Divinity School, East Tennessee State University, and the University of Florida.
 
These newest leadership team members will be joining returning members: Howard E. Taylor, vice president for College advancement since 1999 and Christopher T. Abrams, Ed.D., vice president for student development since 2004, as well as Gary W. Streit, Ph.D., now completing his first year as president of Malone College.   According to Dr. Streit, “I am delighted to have been able to assemble this cadre of able administrators, all of whom believe strongly in Christian higher education, are products of it themselves, and are well prepared to lead their respective areas in these exciting days at Malone.”
