Malone Finishes Ninth in NAIA Directors’ Cup Standings

The Malone College athletics program finished ninth overall in the final NAIA United States Sports Academy Directors’ Cup standings.
 
The Pioneers tallied 625.75 points during the 2007-08 academic year to claim a Top 10 finish among the nearly 300 NAIA colleges and universities across the nation.  The Directors’ Cup is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the United States Sports Academy and USA Today to the best overall collegiate athletic programs in the country.  Point totals were assessed based on how each school fared in NAIA national championship competition. 
 
Azusa Pacific (CA) University posted an incredible 947 points to claim the overall title for the fourth straight year.  Simon Fraser (BC) University was second with 818 points and Embry Riddle Aeronautical (FL) University took third place at 736.25.   Fresno Pacific (CA) University was fourth with 684 points and Concordia (CA) University rounded out the top five at 679.5.
 
Malone registered nine different Top 25 NAIA finishes during 2007-2008 including a national championship in men’s cross country and a fourth-place performance in women’s cross country.  The Pioneers were seventh in men’s outdoor track & field, 11th in men’s indoor track & field, and 16th in men’s golf.  Malone also tied for 17th in men’s tennis, tied for 21st in women’s volleyball and finished 22nd in both women’s golf and women’s outdoor track & field.  Cedarville University, which placed 20th overall with 509.5 points, joined Malone as the only two American Mideast Conference schools to place in the Top 40 of the final standings.
