Malone College Names Charlie Grimes As New Athletic Director

Charlie Grimes has been named the new Director of Athletics at Malone College , the College’s Vice President for Student Development Chris Abrams announced today.  Grimes, who has served as Malone’s men’s and women’s track & field head coach for the past 11 years, takes over for Hal Smith who has served as Malone’s athletic director for the past 21 years.  Smith will continue to coach men’s basketball at the College, a position he has held for 25 seasons.

A 1993 graduate of Western Michigan University (Exercise Science/Public Health), Grimes attained a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology/Biomechanics at Eastern Michigan University in 1996.  A three-time All-Mid American Conference decathlete while at Western Michigan , Grimes will turn his attention from coaching student-athletes to directing a department that boasts 18 intercollegiate sports and one that has numerous veteran coaches.

“I’m honored to be given this opportunity to serve the College and increase my influence in our department,” said Grimes.  “Hal Smith has overcome great odds to develop an excellent group of coaches and student-athletes.  I hope to add my enthusiasm and hard work to continue our great tradition.”

Grimes has guided his track & field teams to a combined 13 AMC championships and nine NCCAA national titles.  Over 475 Pioneer student-athletes have competed at the NAIA Indoor and Outdoor National Track & Field Championships during his tenure and those individuals earned 111 NAIA All-America honors including eight individual national titles.  In addition, his student-athletes earned 62 NAIA Scholar Athlete honors.  Grimes has earned 13 AMC Coach of the Year honors, 10 NAIA Region Coach of the Year accolades and nine NCCAA National Coach of the Year honors.  His teams are also very involved in the NAIA’s Champions of Character Initiative as they have served at various opportunities during national competition each and every year since the Initiative’s commencement in 2000.

“The College is very excited about the commitment that Charlie brings to running a highly competitive Christian college athletic program,” said Abrams.  “His enthusiasm and overall commitment to Malone will undoubtedly make him a successful athletic director.”

Grimes and his wife, Wendy, and their three children, Shannon (12), Katie (11) and Leah (9), reside in Canton .
