Malone College Hires New Track & Field CoachMalone College has hired Mark McClure, a 1991 Malone graduate, as its new men’s and women’s track & field head coach, the College’s athletic director Charlie Grimes announced today. McClure takes over for Grimes who was named the College’s athletic director in late July.
A 1986 Green High School graduate, McClure graduated with a degree in Physical Education from Malone and was a four-year track & field letterman at the College. An outstanding decathlete, McClure stills holds the Malone record for most points in the decathlon with 6863 points. In addition, he was an NCCAA national champion in the high jump.
Having received a masters degree in Physical Education (Athletic Administration) from Ohio University (1992), McClure has most recently served as the head track & field and cross country coach at John Carroll University (JCU) for the past five seasons. He led his 2006 women’s track & field team to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Div. III outdoor national championships and has coached 13 All-Americans during his tenure at JCU. Prior to JCU, McClure was an assistant cross country and track & field coach at Miami University for nine years (1994-2003). He has also been an assistant coach at the University of Akron (1993-94), Emory (GA) University (1992-93) and Ohio University (1991-92).
McClure was also recently inducted into the Malone Athletics Hall of Fame in January of 2007.
“Although I enjoyed my time at John Carroll University, I’m excited to return to Malone and lead the team that helped shape my own life,” said McClure. “I look forward to working with Coach (Jack) Hazen, his staff and our student-athletes. I want to thank Charlie and the search committee for giving me this opportunity to return to Malone.”
"We’re thrilled to add Mark McClure to our staff at Malone,” said Grimes. “He has the experience, vision and ability to mentor our athletes both on the track and in their personal lives. I hope to assist Mark in taking our programs to a whole new level of excellence."
He and his wife, Bonnie, who is employed as a physical therapist and who is a former state champion in the 800 meters, and their four children, Collin (8), Conner (6), Caden (3), and Caleb (1), reside in Green. |
