Pioneers Fall To Marietta In Season Opener

The Malone College men’s soccer team opened its 2008 campaign with a 5-0 defeat on the road Saturday afternoon to NCAA Division III Marietta College.  The hosts held a 1-0 advantage at intermission and then put the game out of reach early in the second half by scoring two quick goals in the opening minutes of the frame.  Marietta later tacked on two more insurance goals en route to the 5-0 final.

The hosts held a 7-3 lead in shots on goal as two Marietta keepers combined for the three-save shutout.  Sophomore Warden Neuenschwander (Linden, VA) played the full 90 minutes in front of the net for Malone, recording two saves.

This week, Malone (0-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 AMC) will look to rebound from the tough loss with a pair of home matches.  The Pioneers will face off with NCAA Division II Tiffin University (0-2-0, 0-0-0 GLIAC) on Wednesday evening at 5:00 p.m. before opening conference play on Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. match against Daemen (NY) College (0-1-0, 0-0-0 AMC).
