Pioneers Fall To Mt. Vernon Nazarene

The Malone College men’s soccer team suffered a 7-0 American Mideast Conference loss to Mt. Vernon Nazarene University at home on Friday afternoon.  The Pioneers trailed by a manageable 2-0 margin at halftime, but the Cougar offense and Friday’s steady rain showers then seemed to each grow stronger in the second stanza as Mt. Vernon Nazarene (4-2 overall, 1-0 AMC) tacked on five more goals to pull away for the convincing 7-0 victory.  With the tough loss, the Pioneers’ record falls to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the AMC.

The Cougars held a 19-1 advantage in total shots on goal in the rain-soaked match.  Malone keepers Warden Neuenschwander (Linden, VA) and Derek Jeffrey (Norton H.S.) combined to make 12 saves on the afternoon while Cougar goaltender Alex Stout stopped the only shot he faced to record his third shutout of the season.

Malone will look to rebound on Saturday evening as the squad travels to Xavier University’s soccer complex to face Cincinnati Christian University in a 6:00 p.m. match.
