Men's Golf Captures Own Fall Classic; Pioneer B Team Finishes Fourth

 
 
The Malone College men's golf team, led by veteran head coach Ken Hyland opened it 2008 fall campaign last Friday and Saturday by hosting its own Malone Fall Classic at the Tannenhauf Golf Course in Alliance, Ohio.  The Pioneer A team came away with a convincing victory among an 11-team field while the Malone B unit took fourth place.     
 
The Malone A team finished with a two-day total of 569 (284-285), which was seven-under-par, was also a Malone Fall Classic record.  The Pioneer B squad tallied a score of 598 (302-296).  Mt. Union College finished second at 590 (295-295), Ohio Dominican University was third at 592 (300-292) and Bethel (IN) College rounded out the top five at 604 (310-294).  Mt. Union's Lucas Murray earned medalist honors at 135 (71-64) and his 64 on day two was also a tournament and course record.
    
Justin Lower (So., Northwest H.S.), with a 68 and 73, and Richie Schembechler (Fr., Massillon Washington H.S.), with a 72 and 69, paced the Malone A team with 141's.  Ben Smith (Jr., Carrollton H.S.) and Michael Strayer (Jr., Riverside H.S.) followed with 145's (Smith 74-71, Strayer 73-72) while Quinn Parker (So., Canton Central Catholic H.S.) tallied a 146 (71-75).  Lower and Schembechler both earned a spot on the five-man All-Tournament Team.
    
The Malone B team was led by Ryan Gaughan (So., Lake H.S.) who fired a 144 (72-72).  Other B scores included Steve Robison (So., Jackson H.S.) at 148 (73-75), Kyle Sine (So., Shawnee H.S.) at 149 (78-71), Mark Zimmerman (Jr., GlenOak H.S.) at 157 (79-78) and Zach Keller (So., Wynford H.S.) at 158 (79-79).  In addition, Andrew Leopold (Fr., Gahanna Lincoln H.S.) competed as an individual and finished with a score of 160 (78-82.
    
This week, Malone will compete at the Stark Memorial Tournament at the Congress Lakes Golf Club in Hartville, Ohio on Monday.  The Pioneer women's golf team will also compete at the event.
