Men's Golf Wins Phipps Memorial Tourney

The Malone College men’s golf team captured the tournament title at the Phipps Memorial Tournament on Monday (Sept. 22) at the Congress Lake Golf Course in Hartville.  The Pioneer A team took the tournament championship (among a six-team field -- three A and three B teams) with a score of 291 while the Pioneer B squad earned a second-place finish with a score of 304. R ounding out the rest of the tournament field was Walsh University A coming in third with a score of 307, Mt. Union College A placing fourth with a score of 310, Mt. Union B finishing in fifth at 322 and the Walsh B team rounding out the sixth spot with a score of 334.

           
The
Malone A team was led by junior Michael Strayer (Riverside H.S.) who earned medalist honors with a score of 68.  Right behind in second-place overall was sophomore Justin Lower (Northwest H.S.) with a score of 71.  These two Malone A team golfers both made the All-Tournament Team with their excellent performances. Other scorers for the A team included Ben Smith (Jr., Carrollton H.S.), who finished sixth with a score of 75, Quinn Parker (So., Canton Central Catholic H.S.), who finished 10th at 77 and Richie Schembechler (Fr., Massillon Washington H.S.), who finished 20th with a score of 80.
           
The Malone B team was paced by sophomore Ryan Gaughan (Lake H.S.) and Zach Keller (So., Wynford H.S.) who both posted scores of 74 and finished tied for fourth at the event.  Both student-athletes earned spots on the five-man All-Tournament Team.  Other scorers for the B team included Mark Zimmerman (Jr., GlenOak H.S.) who finished eighth with a score of 76, Andrew Leopold (Fr., Gahanna Lincoln H.S.) who placed 15th at 79, Kyle Sine (So., Shawnee H.S.), who finished 20th at 80, and Steve Robison (So., Jackson H.S.) who finished 25th with a round of 84.
