Pioneers Score Early And Often In 7-0 Win Over Carlow (PA)The Malone College women’s soccer team picked up its second victory of the season on Saturday afternoon with a convincing 7-0 win over visiting Carlow (PA) University. The Pioneers took command of the contest with four goals in the first half and then tacked on three more scores in the final stanza en route to the 7-0 triumph. With the American Mideast Conference victory, Malone improved its record to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the AMC while the Celtics dropped to 1-8 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
Midfielder Susanna Jonkka (Fr., Helsinki, Finland) got the scoring started for the Pioneers with a goal in the second minute of play. Seniors Aleesha Denmeade (Hoover H.S.) and Ashley Dennerlein (Baden, PA) then went to work as the duo accounted for each of Malone’s next five goals. Denmeade put the hosts in front 2-0 in the 19th minute as she scored a break-away goal off a pass from Dennerlein. Ten minutes later, Dennerlein then found the back of the net to give her squad a commanding 3-0 lead. The first-half scoring was not yet complete, however, as Denmeade scored her second goal of the match with a little over six minutes remaining in the opening stanza. The seniors then each added unassisted goals in the opening minutes of the second frame to push Malone’s advantage to 6-0 and give Denmeade her second hat trick of the season (Denmeade also scored three goals against Rio Grande on September 17th). The final tally of the match then came in the 74th minute as midfielder Katie Heckman (So., Mars, PA) notched her first goal of the year with assists from Denmeade and midfielder Sarah Kenney (Fr., Beverly, MA).
Each team tallied 18 shots on goal in the match as Pioneer goalkeeper Vana Morgan (Sr., West Branch H.S.) stopped all 18 shots that she faced to record her second career shutout.
