Men's Cross Country Wins Loyola Invite (Nik Schweikert Wins Individual Title); Women Place Third

 
The Malone College men's cross country team, ranked #1 in the NAIA national poll, captured the team title at the Loyola (IL) University Invitational last Saturday among a 35-team mostly NCAA Div. I field while the Pioneer women's squad, ranked #4 in the NAIA, finished third among its 32-team field.      The Malone men tallied 44 points for the victory while the University of Illinois placed second with 52 points.  DePaul University took third (144), the University of Western Ontario finished fourth (170) and Aquinas (MI) College rounded out the top five with 178 points.
 
     The Malone women finished with 97 points for their third-place finish as Northwestern University took the women's team title with 76 points.  The University of Missouri edged Malone for second with 93 points, the University of Alabama was fourth (108) and Loyola rounded out the top five with 124 points.
 
     For the men, Nik Schweikert (Sr., Beavercreek H.S.) emerged with an impressive individual title among over 370 runners with a time of 24:49 while Aaron Melhorn (So., Fairless H.S.) placed third overall in a time of 24:58.  Also scoring for Malone were James Zeuch (So., Galion H.S.) in ninth (25:12), Paul Robinson (Jr., Field H.S.) in 10th (25:12) and Chris Sinick (Jr., Field H.S.) in 29th (25:48).
 
     Others who competed for Malone included Jeremy Arthur (Fr., Medina H.S.) in 26:06 (45th), Evan Gaynor (Jr., Delta H.S.) in 26:33 (73rd), Tony Migliozzi (Fr., St. Thomas Aquinas H.S.) in 26:36 (78th), Zach Mathias (Fr.,Galion H.S.) in 26:39 (82nd), Kyle Randolph (So., Galion H.S.) in 26:42 (88th) and Ryan Crocker (Sr., CVCA) in 27:08 (118th).
 
     For the women, Katie Bagley (Sr., Van Wert H.S.) led the way with a 14th-place finish in a time of 18:31 while Kalie Hauenstein was right behind in 15th in 18:36.  Also scoring for the team were Kristen Downing (So., Lake H.S.) in 17th (18:39), Rebekah Genter (Sr., Crestview H.S.) in 22nd (18:42) and Sarah Hines (Jr., Northmor H.S.) in 34th (18:53).
 
     Others who competed for the squad included Lindsey Pifher (So., Colonel Crawford H.S.) in 19:00 (36th), Caitlin Sharp (Fr., East Canton H.S.) in 19:15 (49th), Ashton Avery (Fr., McKinley H.S.) in 19:27 (59th), Melissa Roth (Fr., Celina H.S.) in 19:31 (63rd) and Erin Bauer (Fr., Loveland H.S.) in 20:06 (102nd).
 
     This week, the Malone teams are idle and will next compete in the All-Ohio Championships in Delaware, Ohio on Friday, October 10th.
