Resident Director – Woolman & Whittier Halls

About the position

The position of Resident Director is available to invest in the Malone Residence Life program while gaining leadership experience in the areas of: community development, interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, leadership development, administration, and mentorship. The Residence Life team members develop, coordinate, and maintain a residential program which strives to provide a safe, hospitable student-centered living space where residents can develop a vibrant Christian worldview which informs their spiritual, vocational and communal life in conjunction with the mission and goals of Malone University. The RD will model servant leadership while investing in their 5 Resident Assistants as well as approximately 75 female residents and will help to provide strategic programming for the community in their living area. They will provide leadership to residential students by managing the daily operations of the residence halls while developing an intentional community that strives to engage students in their holistic development. This is a temporary, full-time 10-month contract with residency provided. Each RD maintains a collateral assignment as well.

Salary: $35,568.00/year

Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities

  1. Leadership and supervision for Resident Assistants and Front Desk Staff (40%):
    1. Provide for the professional and personal development and evaluation of Residence Life staff.

    2. Participate in the selection and training of RAs.

    3. Conduct individual and group meetings with RAs; facilitate weekly RA business & staff development meetings in coordination with Dean.

    4. Assist in the planning and implementation of trainings, and RA workshops with the Deans.

    5. Oversee RAs in the planning, administration, and evaluation of programs within each residence hall.

    6. Support the broader mission of student development by collaborating to develop programs that will benefit the entire campus community.

    7. Support University and Residence Life policies and procedures.

  2. Student Interaction, Mentoring, Conduct, and Crisis Management (10%)

    1. Develop a familiarity with residents’ individual needs directly or through the RAs.

    2. Advise and counsel students as requested or needed and make appropriate referrals.

    3. Assist in campus events in coordination with Dean.

    4. Facilitate conduct meetings with students as requested by the Dean.

    5. Participate in the on-call rotation.

    6. Inform Dean as incidents occur and provide the appropriate written and verbal behavioral data relevant to administering guidance and discipline in response to these incidents.
    7. Follow emergency protocol and assist the community emergency situations.
  3. Administration and Facilities Management (10%)
    1. Create and communicate housing assignments to new and returning students.
    2. Coordinate all check-in and check-out procedures in collaboration with Dean and the Housing officer, including residence hall closure during break periods.
    3. Administer room changes when necessary in coordination with Housing officer.
    4. Oversee rounds in each building, and personally conduct rounds once a week.
    5. Monitor physical (health and safety) condition of living area, including usage and condition of facility. Report any needs or concerns to Maintenance department.
    6. Conduct health and safety inspections of individual student rooms at least once a year.
    7. Maintain regular office hours.
    8. Supervise desk receptionist position in residence hall including hiring and evaluation process.
    9. Responsible for residence hall programming and budgets.
    10. Assist the Dean in fulfilling additional responsibilities as directed.
  4. Student Life Staff Involvement (10%)
    1. Serve as a full member of the Residence Life Team, attending bi-weekly staff meetings and participating in all team events.
    2. Attend one-on-one meetings with the Dean.
    3. Actively seek professional growth through participation in professional development activities.
    4. Engage in radical hospitality to residents of their building.
    5. Fulfill collateral assignment as assigned.

This is a temporary, full-time, 10 month position with residency provided. However, there may be times a higher number of hours per week is required, due to emergencies, trainings or events, and thus the schedule can be adapted to provide flexibility to compensate for more demanding situations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must exhibit a personal understanding of, and operate in concert with the Mission statement and Foundational Principals of the University. A bachelor’s degree is required, Master’s preferred. One or two year residence life experience also preferred. Consideration will be given to those who possess experience or supervisory responsibility of college-aged students in ministry or counseling setting. A proven ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing is essential. Proven effective relational skills are also required. A demonstrated ability to collaborate with a wide range of people and a demonstrated ability to efficiently and effectively solve problems and complete projects independently is essential. Computer literacy (Microsoft Office) is required, a readiness to navigate the Student Development procedures.

Proven time management skills, the ability to prioritize and record keeping abilities are essential. Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality of sensitive materials is essential. Current valid driver’s license and availability for some travel is required. Hours per week are anticipated to vary based on the needs and fluctuations of the academic calendar. Evening and weekend commitments will be necessary at times; this is a live-in position.
