Campus Safety Supervisor

About the position

The Safety Supervisor plans, supervises and participates in proactive safety duties and intervention, ensuring a safe environment for students, staff, and the public while on campus properties. This position is responsible for assigning, training and supervising other campus safety officers; the University Safety Department operates on a 24/7 basis. The supervisor addresses safety and security concerns, implements action plans, and ensures related policies are consistently enforced. The supervisor will also assist with regular fire, safety, and security inspections conducted within all University facilities; they will conduct investigations and coordinate all matters involving on property parking. In addition, the supervisor provides operational guidance for a departmental staff, including patrol. The supervisor will also work closely with local emergency services.

Work is performed under general supervision of the Director of Campus Safety in the department of StudentDevelopment. The employee is expected to exercise initiative and independent judgment in accordance with established procedures and regulations working in conjunction with the mission and goals of Malone University.

Negotiable hourly pay

Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities

  1. Supervises and participates, as assigned, as a member of a team for maximizing the safety of staff, students, and visitors on University property.
  2. Ensures that Campus Safety personnel uphold high standards of behavior, safety, judgment, sensitivity to the cultural diversity of the college community and comply with laws, regulations, and administrative policies and procedures.
  3. Serves as a primary point of contact to enhance day-to-day public relations with students, staff, and the public in a way that establishes and maintains rapport with the campus community.
  4. Handles calls for assistance on campus and records incident reports; personally patrols designated campus buildings, grounds, and parking area of the University to preserve law and order.
  5. Oversees daily assignment sheet, prioritizes and issues special instructions, orders, and assignments and participates in the work for the assigned shift. Serves as a mentor to other officers.
  6. Implements routines to protect property and facilities. Performs periodic quality checks of officers’ performance in providing for safety and security.
  7. Enforces campus traffic and parking. Anticipates and intervenes in potential and actual incidents where staff, students and/or property may be at risk of harm or damage.
  8. Reviews safety officers daily activity logs; must be available to fill role when officer is not available, and oversees Campus Safety department when director is absent.
  9. Responds to complaints and hazardous situations. Conducts investigations of reported injuries and accidents. Responds to incidents putting students, staff, and the general public at risk or harm. Interviews victims, complainants, witnesses, and suspects.
  10. Arranges and assigns security at University functions. Communicates schedules for the opening and closing of buildings and rooms for meetings. Oversees the directing of traffic, control of parking and safe movement of vehicles in parking areas. 
  11. Detects and reports fire hazards. Responds to fire and door alarms. Summons fire department personnel asneeded. Directs traffic at emergencies, special events, and other congested situations.
  12. Cooperates with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses
  13. Assures proper functioning of equipment and classroom lockdown equipment. Notifies designated personnel regarding impaired equipment and malfunctions.
  14. Answers questions from students, staff concerning local and State laws, procedures and activities of the department. Provides information and responds to questions from students, staff, and the public.
  15. Participates in various task groups or meetings comprised of University staff.
  16. Maintains up-to-date knowledge and skills related to the duties and responsibilities.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must exhibit a personal understanding of and operate in concert with the Mission statement and Foundational Principles of Malone University.

Minimum qualifications include:

Education/Training: High School diploma required; bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related area preferred.

  • Working knowledge of safety & emergency operations; preferred work experience equivalent to 2-4 years that demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities listed.
  • Ability to execute policies and procedures
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with efficiency in solving problems.
  • Able to motivate a team
  • Basic computer skills with attention to detail in data entry/record keeping.
  • Time management skills with ability to prioritize.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality of sensitive materials.
  • Flexibility, as hours per week are anticipated to vary based on the needs and fluctuations of emergency-response.
  • Knowledge of State & Federal statutes.
  • Successful budget management experience.
  • Able to successfully pass background check.
  • Able to meet the physical demands that are represented by the essential functions of this job.
  • Ability to make accurate decisions reflecting sound judgment, knowledge of law & adherence to established guidelines & procedures
  • Maintain certifications in CPR, First Aid and AED.
  • Must have a valid Ohio driver’s license
