Malone Nature Preserve Camp Manager

Position Summary

The Camp Manager at Malone Nature Preserve is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and light maintenance of the facility. Reporting primarily to the Facilities Director (80%) and secondarily to the Director of Event Services (20%), the Camp Manager acts as the on-site point of contact for all events, contractors, and volunteers. Key responsibilities include ensuring that all assets are maintained in good working order, coordinating event logistics, and facilitating communication among stakeholders to ensure successful events and efficient facility operations. The role requires strong organizational skills, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and a commitment to preserving the natural environment of the preserve.

Essential Duties, Tasks, and Responsibilities

Facilities Management (Approx. 80%)

  1.  Volunteer Management
    • Manage volunteers for grounds upkeep (mowing, weeding, firewood cutting).
  2. Grounds Cleanup
    • Ensure that the grounds are cleaned and maintained regularly.
  3. Ropes Course Maintenance
    • Work with Malone representatives to update and maintain the ropes course.
  4. Light Maintenance
    • Perform small repairs related to HVAC, plumbing, lighting, and door handles.
    • Stay on top of safety concerns (tripping hazards, life safety, electrical hazards).
  5. Inspections
    • Involved in all inspections (fire, fire alarm, kitchen hood, health department, water testing, wastewater treatment).
  6. Safety Monitoring
    • Monitor security cameras on site.
    • Implement emergency protocols during group events (e.g., tornado warnings).
  7. Light Cleaning
    • Conduct light cleaning tasks.
  8. Service Department Support
    • Assist with event setup and teardown on campus, as assigned.
  9. Winter Operations
    • Manage snow removal at the Malone Nature Preserve. Assist with snow removal on campus, as needed.
  10. Playground Safety Inspections
    • Conduct regular safety inspections of playground equipment.
  11. Procedure Oversight (Facilities & Events)
    • Ensure compliance with procedures during rental periods.
  12. Inventory Management
    • Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies, light bulbs, kitchen supplies, and other essential items.
    • Order supplies as needed to ensure adequate stock levels.

Event Services Management (Approx. 20%)

  1. Check-In and Check-Out Management
    • Oversee the check-in and check-out processes for groups using Malone Nature Preserve and Camp Gideon.
    • Assist with Summer Camps & Conferences on campus
    • Weekly Coordination
      • Communicate with Event Services weekly to determine which groups are scheduled on the calendar for the coming weeks and months. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Manage camp operations and coordinate activities in accordance with the university's mission.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all campers and staff, adhering to security and confidentiality guidelines.
  • Work independently while also collaborating with the camp team and university staff.
  • Perform moderate physical activities, including standing, walking, and lifting objects up to 40 pounds.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by university administration.
  • Personal understanding of and alignment with the university’s evangelical Christian mission and foundational principles.
  • High School Diploma required; Associate's Degree or higher preferred.
  • Strong multitasking abilities and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to provide exceptional customer service.
  • Basic knowledge of maintenance and housekeeping practices.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Work primarily in a camp setting at Malone Nature Preserve, with occasional duties on the university campus.
