University Health Nurse (RN)

About the position

The University Health Nurse – RN provides professional nursing care, health education and health services to students. This person makes independent nursing assessments which includes diagnoses, treatment, education, and referrals as appropriateregarding injuries, illnesses, first aid, emergency care or crisis intervention. They maintain medical records and ensure compliancewith best nursing practices and protocols, University policies and health program protocols, and state laws and regulations. Duties and responsibilities are carried out with considerable independence within the framework of established University policies, procedures and guidelines.

Work is performed under general supervision of the VP of Student Development with direction provided by Jackson FamilyPractice. The employee is expected to exercise initiative and independent judgment in accordance with established procedures and regulations working in conjunction with the mission and goals of Malone University. This is a 32-hour position.

$25.00/hour

Essential Duties, Tasks, and Responsibilities

  1. Provides professional nursing care and health services to students; makes independent nursing assessments, diagnoses and evaluations in a clinical ambulatory care setting regarding injuries and illnesses and provides first aid, emergency care or crisis intervention to students on certain medical conditions. Liaises with Jackson Family practice for advanced-level patient needs.
  2. Assist student patients in a courteous, professional manner; accurately interview patients, provide necessary information, and complete/verify/maintain patient data. Ability to function well under flexible and, at times, stressful circumstances.
  3. Advises patients on health maintenance and disease prevention and provides referrals for cost-effective, appropriate care; orders, interprets and evaluates diagnostic tests to assess patient conditions, including blood pressure, tuberculosis, vision, vital signs and in-house lab tests; administers immunizations/vaccines and assists physicians and nurse practitioners during clinical hours.
  4. Documents patient medical information, condition, treatment, advice and referrals on patient medical charts utilizing electronic medical records; maintains confidential patient medical records; offers guidance on insurance documents; prepares accident reports, immunization reports or tuberculosis results and maintains copies in patient records; serves as a resource to Health Services staff for assistance/support on electronic medical records system.
  5. Serves as a health educator and advocate for students; distributes health education materials and participates in health education events as needed.
  6. Serves as a member of the University Emergency Response Team as directed. Completes administrative duties as it relates to reporting data to local/state health departments as necessary.
  7. Participates in allocating the pharmaceutical, laboratory and medical supplies budget; inventories and orders clinical medical supplies; participates in cleaning and organizing assigned clinic areas.
  8. Attends professional group meetings and participates on assigned committees.
  9. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

This is a 32-hour, 9.5 month position. There may be times when a higher number of hours per week is required, due to emergencies, trainings or events, and thus the schedule can be adapted to provide flexibility to compensate for more demanding situations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must exhibit a personal understanding of, and operate in concert with the Mission statement and Foundational Principles of Malone University.

Minimum qualifications include

Experience: Five years of responsible nursing experience in an ambulatory care or student health services environment. Education/Training: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Certificates: First Aid certification. Candidate should also have understanding of and adherence to HIPAA laws. Consideration will also be given to those with proven medical experience/knowledge.

Principles and techniques of performing standard and emergency healthcare and nursing assessments, patient care planning and delivery, patient education and evaluation of outcomes. Pharmacology of commonly prescribed medicines and drugs and their therapeutic effects and possible adverse reactions. Principles, practices and techniques of safety and infection control. Principles, practices, concepts and techniques used in community health and community health promotion and education. Candidate will demonstrate:

  • effective written and verbal communication skills with a wide range of people.
  • strong relational skills with efficiency in solving problems in a fast-paced environment.
  • basic computer skills with attention to detail in data entry/record keeping.
  • time management skills with ability to prioritize.
  • ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality of sensitive materials.
  • flexibility, as hours per week are anticipated to vary based on the needs and fluctuations of medical-response. Some evenings and/or weekend duties will be necessary at times.
