Malone University Brick Building Competition: Rules & Timeline

Eligibility

  • Open to school-age children (K-12) in Stark county. 
  • This contest is for individuals; team submissions (2 or more people) will not be accepted.


Theme 

  • All entries must represent a recognizable landmark in Stark County. Some examples include the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the McKinley Monument, Hall of Fame Bridge, Centennial Park, Paul Brown Tiger Stadium, etc. 


Size & Build Specifications

  • Dimensions: 

    1.  Maximum size is 400 sq. inches. It can be 20 inches square, 40 inches x 10 inches, etc.

    2.  Height limit: 2 feet (24 inches) tall. 

      Please note that size is not a part of judging criteria; bigger does not necessarily mean better. 

  • Materials: 

    1.  Only LEGO® bricks and elements are allowed. No other materials (e.g. glue, tape, non-LEGO® accessories) can be used. 

    2.  Models can include LEGO®-compatible elements, such as baseplates or Duplo bricks, but they must be constructed primarily from LEGO®

  • Originality: 

    1.  Each model must be an original creation based on the chosen landmark; no pre-made or commercially available models are allowed. 


Submission Guidelines

  • Registration: Participants must register by January 31, 2025. 

  • Entry Submission: Finished models must be submitted digitally (photo and written paragraph) by March 1. Finalists will be notified and should bring physical models to Malone University for display by March 7 at 4:30 pm. 

  • Display: All models must remain intact for the duration of the competition; there will be no disassembly during the event. 

  • Written Submission: Participants should submit a brief description of their model and the landmark it represents (3-5 sentences). 


Judging Criteria

Submissions will be judged according to the following: 

  • Creativity (30%): Build should incorporate a unique interpretation of the chosen landmark 

  • Detail & Craftsmanship (30%): Attention to detail and quality of construction

  • Representation (30%): Thorough and recognizable representation of the chosen Stark County landmark

  • Presentation (10%): Overall appearance and aesthetic of the model


Resources

  • Scott Brown, a LEGO® Master Builder, will be releasing 3 educational videos throughout the month of February to help contestants with building strategies, LEGO® techniques, and other insights. 


Awards

  • Prizes will be awarded in each age group for first place. 

  • Prizes may also be awarded for honorable mentions and/or community choice award(s). 


Timeline of Events 

  • January 31: Registration closes

  • February 3: Video 1 available on YouTube Kids

  • February 10: Video 2 available on YouTube Kids

  • February 17: Video 3 available on YouTube Kids 

  • March 3: Digital submissions closed. Submissions will be reviewed and finalists will be notified  March 6-12.

  • March 13 - 14: Structure drop off at Malone University. 

  • March 17 - 18: Structures will be open for community viewing. 

  • March 18: Winners are announced during Malone’s Day of Giving. Details will be shared with finalists closer to the event.  


Additional Information

  • The first 25 registrants who provide a photograph of themselves with their entry will have a custom LEGO® minifigure in their likeness included in a custom scale model of Malone University's Randall Campus Center (to be displayed at the event).
