Called to be a peacemaker
Political Science and Global & International Studies major Hannah Masloski ’19 has both a specific dream job and a general one. If she could do anything, she would love to work in the office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process (UNSCO) in Jerusalem. But no matter what, she knows she wants to be a part of building peace in places of conflict.
Studying abroad last semester only fueled that passion.
“My semester abroad in the Middle East (Jordan, Israel-Palestine, Egypt, and Morocco) not only allowed me to better understand Arab culture, but come to better understand my own,” said Masloski.
In addition to homestays in Israel and Palestine, she also interned at Desert Rose - Holy Land Design in Jordan, where she worked with women who are physically disabled and underprivileged.
“I have always been interested in politics - that’s the part of me that wants to better our world,” says Masloski. “I care about and want to engage in politics because this is the sphere that most profoundly shapes humans’ lives. My major has allowed me to develop strong writing and research skills as well as challenge me to think critically about complex issues and events. My professors show me how to integrate my faith into my discipline, acting as a steward of Christ’s Kingdom.”
Here at Malone, the well-spoken senior also is a soccer player.
“I chose Malone because I knew the opportunities I would receive here could be used as a springboard for my career aspirations. Being part of Women’s Soccer has given me a variety of skills that will benefit me for the rest of my life… given the global popularity of soccer, it has given me a lived experience to share with others around the world,” she said. ”My majors have allowed me to study abroad, an experience that has become influential in my view of the world and helped me determine my career. I want to positively impact the lives of others.”
