Debra Lee, Chair of Nursing, Chief Nurse Administrator, Professor of Nursing
How long have you been at Malone University?
I became a Pioneer in 1998, when I enrolled in our RN-to-BSN program. Then I returned in 2007 to be an adjunct nursing faculty member. In 2009, I came aboard full time and haven’t looked back!
What attracted you to work at Malone?
As a student, I experienced the amazing hospitality and warmth of our faculty and staff. Each encounter was pleasant and their commitment to serving the Kingdom by caring for students was evident. Who wouldn’t want to work and serve at a place where you are valued, supported, challenged, and loved as Christ has called us to love? Now I’m on the giving end of the kindness that I received!
What do you enjoy most about your job responsibilities?
My role brings me into contact with others on behalf of our students and our mission. Whether those ‘others’ are colleagues and coworkers at Malone or community partners, students’ families, or professional peers, remaining mission-focused simply brings out the best in our work.
How do you answer when asked to describe Malone’s brand of education?
Wrap-around service and an opportunity to come face-to-face with some of the most amazing and inspiring people (and I’m not just talking faculty here) you could hope to learn from, and with!
How would you describe Malone students?
Malone students are a vibrant reminder of the good that is possible in our world. Seekers with the heart for God! I am a better human being for having known and walked with our students.
How has working at Malone shaped your individual faith journey?
My faith journey really came alive when I was an RN-to-BSN student here, and it’s become my center point for life. Malone’s culture has shaped my worldview with richer and broader dimensions than I could ever have imagined. Those dimensions are a big part of what makes my faith walk so very precious and essential to me.
Describe your colleagues and their commitment to Malone?
My colleagues’ commitment to Malone is a key element of the inspiring ways in which we have grown to support each other. It’s no secret we’ve gone through some rough times, but we’ve gone through them together as a family! As a body of believers! These folks are truly committed to Christ’s Kingdom First, individually and collectively. And it continues to make all the difference.
something people might be surprised to learn about you?
In another life, I was an amateur jazz trumpet player! The music of the ‘30s and ‘40s is some of the best ever put down. Fun to play, and fun to enjoy watching others enjoy as you play!
