Illuminating the Word of God: A turning of the pages of The Saint John’s Bible

Posted

In this experiential session, Paul Anderson ’78, Ph.D., will be conducting a turning of the pages through Volume 6, Gospels and Acts (at 6:30 p.m. and at 7:45 p.m.) and presenting a PowerPoint overview of the illuminative artwork of The Saint John’s Bible at 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 3.

Malone University’s Cattell Library is the permanent home of all seven volumes in the The Saint John’s Bible Heritage Edition – one of a limited number of full-sized, signed, and numbered fine-art reproductions of the original masterpiece. Malone’s copy is the first hand-calligraphied complete version of the entire bible in half a millennium – with 160 new works of art, each illuminated with gold, silver, and platinum plating.

"One of the extraordinary undertakings of our time," says Smithsonian Magazine.

“It’s like having the entire ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Cattell Library,” said Anderson.
It is a special occasion when this edition of the Bible is opened and explored.

“Malone truly is fortunate to have a copy of the seven-volume St. John's Bible, a beautifully crafted work of art, in its collection,” said Jacalynn Stuckey ’77, Ph.D., “Dr. Anderson is a world-renowned Johannine scholar, so I am especially looking forward to his presentation and learning about this unique artifact from a new perspective."

Paul Anderson, Ph.D. '78 serves as Professor of Biblical and Quaker Studies at George Fox University and as Extraordinary Professor of Religion at the North-West University of Potchefstroom, South Africa. Anderson received Malone’s Alumni of the Year Award in 1999 and has served as a visiting scholar or professor at Yale Divinity School, Princeton Theological Seminary, the University of Mainz, and the Radboud University of Nijmegen. Author of more than 400 published essays and editor or author of more than 30 books, Anderson’s books include Following Jesus, The Christology of the Fourth Gospel, and From Crisis to Christ. He edits three book series, and is a founding member of the John, Jesus, and History Project, calling for a Fourth Quest for Jesus – one that includes the Gospel of John rather than leaving it out. He and his wife have three grown daughters and attend Reedwood Friends Church in Portland, Oregon.

This event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited.
