Daelen Simons ‘22, Zoo and Wildlife Biology
Before he ever heard of Malone University, Daelen Simons ‘22 made a quick Google search, looking for potential colleges to attend. This search would eventually lead him nearly 1000 miles away to Canton, Ohio, a place that easily became his home away from home.
Simons is originally from Bermuda, a small island in the Atlantic Ocean about 650 miles off the coast of North Carolina. Shortly after learning about Malone, he decided to pursue a degree in Zoo & Wildlife Biology.
“My favorite basketball player, LeBron James, is the reason I was considering schools in Ohio, but my main reason for choosing Malone was my interest in Zoo & Wildlife Biology,” he said. “I found out Malone had a small zoo on campus, which I thought was really cool because it would give me some experience working with animals in a zoo setting. I love animals, both land and marine. I grew up with pets in my house and my curiosity for animals has grown ever since, which is why I decided to pursue it as a career.”
Simons can attest to the fact that being an international student is hard at times. Yet, Malone’s community and welcoming atmosphere continues to shine through.
“There is a great community here, and since day one I have felt welcomed. It is hard being so far from home, but my friends here, especially in Haviland Hall, have made it so much easier. They have made Malone feel like a home away from home,” said Simons. “My professors have also been great. Dr. Courter regularly checks on me to see how I am doing and is ready to help me to succeed in any way he can. It is evident that the professors here care for their students and really want us to succeed.”
Simons has had the opportunity to work at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum, and
Zoo, the local zoo and aquarium on his home island. Following graduation, he hopes to continue pursuing his passions by working with animals as a professional.
